Sustainable Tourism
Walking Palestine strongly encourages all walkers to contribute to the socio-economic development of rural Palestinian communities, for example through visiting local sites and restaurants, or through hiring a local guide. Walking Palestine fully endorses the principles set by the global Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.
DOs
- Plan your walk and walk the plan: study the route before you set out
- Be considerate of the local community: treat locals as your generous hosts as you walk through their towns and near their properties
- Allow plenty of time to finish your walk well before dark
- Bring enough water, drink regularly and protect your eyes and skin from the sun
- Greet anybody you meet along the trail (see the Arabic on the Trail section of the book)
- Leave what you find: respect history, heritage and nature
- If you explore walks outside this book, walk with a map of the area and monitor your progress (see walk #25 in the book for tips)
DON’Ts
- Don’t leave any waste behind (including organic waste)
- Don’t damage or remove pieces of historic structures
- Don’t take close-up pictures of people without their permission
- Don’t walk through planted fields or through deserted patches (a very tiny part of the West Bank is still mined; nearly all of it is signposted)
- Don’t walk up to or near settlements, outposts or military camps
- Don’t walk with any type of arms
